Download Flyer ButtonThe Lean Daily Improvement Facilitator understands how to make small but meaningful daily adjustments to how we work and behave in order to move or hold a metric. Lean Daily Improvement (LDI) is useful for making systematic small-step changes while work is being done, and sustaining the gains that have been made through other change efforts. LDI builds a team-based, continuous improvement habit at the point of service.

Through this training, participants will learn how to choose a key performance metric; collect and display data visually; run team huddles to get to root causes; assign corrective actions; and keep the process moving. Training for this certification will presented through three (3) online learning modules to be taken at your pace to earn micro-credentials in the form of digital education badges from Purdue University. The modules are:

  1. Five Change-Making Skills
  2. Microlearning and Small Step Change Systems
  3. Kaizen and Lean Continuous Improvement

Each module is competency-based, includes remote coaching, and develops a stand-alone skill that is immediately applicable to your work environment. Earned badges accumulate into a LDI certification. 

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To achieve the Lean Practitioner certification a participant must:

  1. Complete LDI online core training and earn three digital badges.
  2. Set-up and facilitate at least one LDI process that successfully makes or sustains a material change to a key performance indicator.
  3. Contribute to the online Community of Practice for Operational Excellence in Healthcare. You will learn more about this on your first day of training.

Training must be completed three (3) months after enrollment, and the LDI application must be completed six (6) months after that.

PERFORMANCES OR TOP-LEVEL COMPETENCIES

The Lean Daily Improvement Facilitator will develop and demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Facilitate 1-2 hour Kaizen events to define the outcome, key performance indicator, standard work method and target behaviors to undergo continuous improvement.
  • Design, build and install the visual management board needed to facilitate LDI including run charts, countermeasure forms, knowledge cards, Kamishibai cards, Pareto graphs and other visual controls to quickly identify when performance is outside the desired range.
  • Design and implement a data collection processes to update the visual management board that in a timely (often daily) and practical.
  • Facilitate the creation of try-this and observe-that cards to enable team corrective action, feedback and behavior change.
  • Monitor visual controls and facilitate short team huddles to identify root causes of performance problems, develop and assign countermeasures (small corrective actions that can be completed with the resources at hand) and review open items.
  • Keep the process moving by determining when to take on a new performance goal; facilitate additional 1-2 hour Kaizen events to rethink the standard work; and determine when larger efforts, such as rapid improvement events, are needed.
  • Coach others on LDI principles and practice.

OVERVIEW OF CORE TRAINING

Training is done online at the participant’s own pace and is supported with remote coaching.  Modules are focused on building and applying competencies.  Learning is demonstrated by completing experiments or mini-projects by applying the competencies to real-world problems.  No exam is required. 

The training includes four modules as outlined below. 

  1. Introduction: Provides a brief introduction to LDI, sample applications, and how it compares to other change methods.
  2. Five Change Making Skills: Explains why LDI works by showing how it incorporates five best practices and the latest scientific thinking on how to make change. Participants apply the five best practices of behavior change to a real-world challenge and earn a digital badge.
  3. Microlearning and Small Step Change Systems: Explains why microlearning is necessary for behavior change and LDI and presents a general purpose approach to implementing it based on knowledge cards. Participants apply knowledge cards to a real-world challenge and earn a digital badge.
  4. Kaizen and Continuous Improvement: Uses the insights and tools from modules one and two to present a seven-step process for implementing LDI at work, home or any location. Participants complete an LDI implementation on a real-world challenge to earn a third digital badge.
