PHA helps , Ind.-based pediatrics practice successfully achieve MU and defend its attestationThursday, November 19, 2015
Kids First Pediatrics on 30, a small group practice in Dyer, Ind., was audited in 2014 by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration/Indiana Medicaid for a physician attestation to the Meaningful Use Incentive Payment Program for reporting year 2013. The four-page audit packet received by the practice was very robust and included numerous questions on patient volume calculations that the practice administrator was not quite sure how to answer.
Kids First contacted Purdue Healthcare Advisors (PHA), a Purdue University outreach program that had assisted the practice earlier with attestation support and provided its security risk assessment. A four-hour, on-site visit from PHA helped expedite the process for obtaining the audit-requested supporting documentation. Providing proof of attestation eligibility involved calculating the percentage of Medicaid patients seen by the provider along with the specifics of those visits (i.e. date of service and patient number). PHA determined that, due to a software glitch, several of the questions required the assistance of the EHR vendor in obtaining accurate patient volume reports.
“I had generated the numbers to report for the attestation through our EHR software, but to explain why certain numbers were chosen and used in the report was nerve racking,” said Kids First Office Manager Jacqueline Chang-Stroman, RN, BSN, CCE. “Having Purdue Healthcare Advisors with me to work through the audit questionnaire line-by-line made all the difference.”
PHA helped Kids First gather the documentation necessary to prove the attestation was valid. With that documentation, Kids First was able to answer all the questions in the audit questionnaire with the exception of a few that did not appear to be applicable to the practice. Upon further review, the auditor allowed Kids First to disregard those questions. Once the FSSA auditor determined no overpayment of incentive money was found to be due, the practice was able to focus on the workflow changes it will make to attest successfully to Stage 2 MU.
